Esteemed karate fans, dear visitors and participants of the European
senior karate Championships, It is with pleasure that I welcome you to the 44th European senior karate Championships which is being held in Zagreb on May 8-10, 2009. Karate is an ancient martial art which originated more than a thousand years ago in India, China and the Japanese island of Okinawa from where it spread to the rest of the world. Croatia has a tradition of karate that spans over half a century. Croatian Karate Federation has already organized many important competitions and being entrusted with the organization of the European senior karate Championships is a great acknowledgement as well as a responsibility for Croatian karate and sport in general. Judging by previous karate competitions held in Croatia, I believe that organizing this Championships will greatly contribute to the popularization of this noble sport in Croatia and increase the number of young people involved in it. We are proud that the Croatian capital city is the host of this karate Championships and that we will have the opportunity to enjoy the skill of the best European karate masters. To all the participants of the 44th European senior karate Championships I wish successful performances and luck with their careers and I would like to invite all the fans of this sport to come and support this event.prof.dr.sc.
